(Ontario Science Centre) — I’m sure all of you have seen your share of underwater documentaries. But still, getting an eyeful of coral, eels and plankton one more time is still a completely amazing experience. The IMAX scope of things does help: you can see the texture of a shark’s skin, almost touch the feathery texture of a jellyfish’s tentacles.I’m sure all of you have seen your share of underwater documentaries. The IMAX scope of things does help: you can see the texture of a shark’s skin, almost touch the feathery texture of a jellyfish’s tentacles. I also give credit to the filmmakers here, who combine their gorgeous photography with something of a storyline: tales of how underwater species are interconnected, how even predators serve a purpose to the animals they eat. The writing is lively and it helps that celebrity actors Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet share the job of narrating the film. Another big name, Danny Elfman, did the music. His frenetic style adds a lot of drama, but I found it a bit much at times. There’s an environmental message coming out in the movie — that overfishing is throwing off the balance of these underwater relationships and that’s killing the ocean — but it’s shown more than told. I’m sure there will be a few young ones refusing tuna sandwiches after seeing the film. Be warned that creatures do eat other creatures here, and there’s some really weird looking fish in our seas, so skittish kids might want to skip this one. Runs until September, 416-696-1000.
